Department News
Purpose
Success and New Directions is an Alternative Education Program for students 16 - 20 years old.  SANDS supports the belief that every student can earn a high school diploma.  After acceptance into the SANDS program an individualized graduation plan is developed between:
1. Student
2. Parent/Guardian
3. SANDS staff
  • SANDS sutdents utilize a flexivle schedule.
  • Graduation requirments are as rigorous as Grand Island Senior High
  • SANDS students are monitored on an individual basis.
  • All staff and students are SANDS promote a positive and supportive learning environment.
  • Every SANDS student is assigned an Academic Advisor to monitor student progress and assignments.

Graduation plans must meet traditional high school diploma requirements.  Grand Island Public Schools requires 220 credits to receive a high school diploma.
History
SANDS opened August 25, 2003 for students that had dropped out of high school.  Twenty-two students applied, interviewed and were accepted into the SANDS program.  On November 20, 2003 there were forty-two students enrolled in the Success and New Directions program.  Currently 62 students have graduated from SANDS.
Application
SANDS is an application program offered through Grand Islans Senior High.  To apply for the SANDS programs, students must have made an attempt to be successful in the traditional high school program.  Students may not currently have their GED and apply for the SANDS program.

Students may apply to SANDS if they meet on or more of the following criteria:
1. have dropped out
2. have participated in Progress School
3. have been referred by a Student Assistance Team
4. have completed a self-referral
5. have been mandatorily reassigned

Monday - Thursday 8:00 am - 4:00 pm
Fridays  - 8:00 am - 11:30 am
