Task Title: Nebraska Brochures
Subject: Social Studies and Writing

Introduction: Students have been studying Nebraska during the
first semester. They will begin looking at brochures, books,
encyclopedias, and internet sites to find places of interest.
Content standards/understandings assessed through this task:
Language Arts Writing Standard
2.1 Create a clear picture with supporting details in written work
Use conventional spelling in written work
Capitalize proper nouns in written work
Six Traits
Task Description: The teacher will show a professionally created
brochure about a special place in Nebraska that has descriptive
paragraphs. The students will then be told that they have been
hired by a place in Nebraska that is interesting to them. They
are the creators of a brochure that will inspire others to visit.
The description should tell visitors where it is, activities that can
be attended while there, how much it may cost, etc. There should
be at least 3 paragraphs with a main idea and supporting details.
Pictures will be added to help show value.
Task Directions: You have been hired by your special place in
Nebraska that is of interest to you. You are the creator of a
brochure that will inspire others to visit. Your description
should tell visitors where it is, activities that can be attended while
there, how much it may cost, etc. There should be at least 3
paragraphs with a main idea and supporting details that will explain
why someone would like to visit your choice of places in
Nebraska. Pictures will be added to help people understand your
special place.
Description of student product(s)/performance(s) which will provide
evidence of learning: The student will create a brochure by using
Pages or Appleworks which will include at least three paragraph.
Each paragraph will include a main idea and supporting details.
There will also be at least three pictures for visuals of the Nebraska
sight. The student will add references to give credit to authors.
Criteria for evaluation of student products/performances: Click

It will include 6 Traits, main ideas with clear supporting details, and
neatness.

Resources needed: Students will use Google to search for pictures
and information. Pages and/or Appleworks will also be needed to
create the brochure. Books, encyclopedias, and brochures will
provide information about different places people would like to visit
in Nebraska.
Teacher reflections: This project was wonderful for students to
share with others. They could use this as a speaking presentation
practice. Even struggling students were successful. It was
easy to modify to different learning levels.
