Task Title: E-mailing a Teacher
Subject: Writing
Designer: Alice Barnes
Introduction: This can be a great way to get students of any age
interested in writing for a purpose. Many times children like to
keep contact with teachers from previous years. E-mailing teachers
adds the technology that young people crave!
Content standards/understandings assessed through this task:
Writing 2.1 Six Traits and the Writing Process
Technology 4.1.1 Access account, retrieve, compose, send and reply to messages using class accounts
Task Description: Given the writing prompt to write a teacher
about how your 4th grade year is going, students will use their 6
Traits of Writing and the Writing Process to construct a letter to a
teacher of their choice in GIPS.
Task Directions: Review the Writing Process and 6 Traits to
ensure students produce a quality product. The final copy will be
written on an Appleworks document. When it is completed, students
will access their FirstClass class account to paste the letter and send
it to the teacher. They will be in charge of checking the account
at least weekly to retrieve a response.
Description of student product(s)/performance(s) which will provide
evidence of learning: Students will peer score their revised and
edited letters using a district rubric to ensure it is at a 3 or better
in each trait. When there is a quality product, they may type it
in Appleworks to paste into FirstClass.
Criteria for evaluation of student products/performances:
Students will use the district rubric to score the letter.
It will need to be at a score of 3 or better in each trait.

Resources needed: FirstClass, Appleworks, a computer, district writing rubrics.
Teacher reflections: I think I will ask teachers to sign up to
receive a letter in the future. Not many teachers replied, so
students have used the FirstClass between themselves more than
communicating with teachers.
