The Grand Island Outreach and Literacy Development (G.O.L.D.) Star Preschool Program was established in August of 2002. The purpose of the program was, and continues to be, to provide a comprehensive preschool experience that is culturally and linguistically sensitive to the need of English Language Learners who are ages 3 and 4. Five critical components are addressed in the program including: developing language and literacy, establishing cultural connections, assessing health and nutrition services, forming parent partnerships, and collaborating with existing programs and resources.

Children develop language and literacy skills in the center based learning environment. Highly qualified teachers and paraeducators structure the learning environment to provide optimal language and literacy learning opportunities.

Cultural connections are established by intentionally staffing the program with teachers and paraeducators that are familiar with and sensitive to the cultural needs of their students. Efforts are made to include diverse learning opportunities including the use of the native language and instructional materials that are representative of the children's home culture. Children and families are also introduced to school culture, procedures, and policies to better prepare them for the transition to school age programming.

Forming partnerships with parents is important as they are their child's first teacher. Parents are highly encouraged to visit and volunteer in the classroom, and participate in take home activities and family literacy nights. Efforts are made to ensure that parents are informed about the program and their child's ongoing progress through home visitation, parent teacher conferences, and informal conferences at the start or end of the day. Whenever possible, communication with parents is sent home in English and their home language.

Health and nutrition are addressed by requiring children to have an initial medical exam and maintaining current immunizations, and providing nutritious meals and snack. Health screening is available through the school nurse office on an ongoing basis. Healthy habits are modeled and taught such as brushing teeth, washing hands, exercise, and taking a rest time.

G.O.L.D. Star Preschool collaborates with a variety of partners in order to maximize the use of existing resources. Title I Part A, Title I Part C, Title III, CNSSP and the Outreach Center are partnership with the program.
