Becoming Naomi Leon
by Pam Munoz Ryan

Lexile 830   Guided Reading Level: Y   Reading Level-5    RC! Points-11

Naomi and her brother Owen live happily with their Gram in the Avocado Acres Trailer Rancho.  Then Skyla, their mother, shows up one day to reclaim Naomi, but not physically disabled Owen.  Naomi realizes that all her wishing to live with her mother may not have a happy ending. Gram whisks them off to Oaxaca, Mexico hoping to find Naomi's dad to help keep their family together.

Create a new ending for the story. What if the judge sent Naomi to live with Skyla?  What if the judge ordered both Owen and Naomi to live with Skyla?  What if the children went to live with their father in Mexico?  What if their father came to live with them?  Create your new ending using AW6 or write it in a journal or writer's notebook.  Give your ending an authentic voice by recording your story using an iPod and creating a podcast--an ending that is similar to a book-on- tape/CD.

Make a list--Naomi kept lists. She wrote down things she felt were important. She had lists of, "Things I am Good At," "Splendid Words",  and "Unusual Names",  just to name a few. What lists would you create for yourself?  What do they say about you as a person? Begin a few on large paper that you can hang in your classroom or media center and share with your classmates.

Research the following web site Planeta http://www.planeta.com/oaxaca.html to find information and pictures about Oazaca, Mexico where Gram takes Naomi and Owen to find their father. Use the site to explore the real Oaxaca and the Night of the Radishes.  After researching, create a Keynote to a compare the festival in the book to the information you learned about the real city and festival.

Naomi carves soap into animals.  Later, readers find out that Naomi's dad is an expert wood carver who takes part in a family tradition of carving radishes for Oaxaca, festival Night of the radishes.  Use plastic knives to carve a shape from soap or radishes.   Use Ivory Soap Website for some helpful tips.

After doing some research, choose a city or small town in California that you think best resembles Lemon Tree, the town where Naomi and Owen live in "Baby Begula".  Then visit one of the following web sites and plan a trip of your own from California to Mexico simular to the one Gram took Naomi and Owen on. Develop a budget, time frame, directions/mileage, and an agenda of activities to do while at your destination.

Check out this California city--Lemon Grove, CA
Does it resemble Lemon Tree, CA-- the city where Naomi, Owen, and Gram lived?
