EXAMPLES OF
TIER TWO WORDS
FOR NOMINATED GSA BOOKS

Tier Two Words allow students to describe with greater specificity, familiar people and situations.
These words have been chosen considering the following criteria:
  • high frequency words for mature language users
  • not domain specific words like: biome, peninsula
  • words are easy to explain in simple language that students understand
  • words are useful to students in everyday conversation

Vocabulary Best Practices:
Teach words from text that are read aloud to children, rather than books read by children.

When selecting words to teach, remember this quote from Robert Frost:
There are two kinds of teachers:  those who fill you with so much quail shot that you can't move and those that give you a prod and you jump to the skies.

Example of Teaching Sequence during a "read aloud"
(Ideas selected from Bringing Words to Life by Isabel Beck)
  • Simply and briefly give meaning of the word at the moment it is met in the text or let students come up with the meaning through contexual clues.  If they stray too far from the meaning, step in to redirect.
  • When you are finished reading, give opportunities for the students to engage in activities which require them to process the meaning of the word.
