Task Title: Rebus Poem in Garage Band
Subject: Lang.Arts, Writing
Designer: Jill Hudnall and Leah Faltin
Introduction:
We are preparing rebus poems as a part of our Valentine≠s writing
activity. Students brainstorm different ideas in an open discussion
setting. Students will look at a sample rebus poem in the form of
a book to get ideas. Students will create a rough draft of their poem
and then speak their poem to music in garage band.
Content standards/understandings assessed through this task:
Strand 3: Speaking
Task Description:
Student will create a rebus poem following this format...
Every lock loves a key
Every flower loves a bee
Every bird loves a tree
And I Love You!
The student will draw a picture in place of the 2nd and 5th word in the
poem. They will create 4 stanzas in this same manner.
Task Directions:
1. First read ILove You rebus poem book so students see how a rebus poem is put together.
2. Then come up with items that go together as a class...lock and key
3. Next come up with words that rhyme with the last word...key and bee
4. Finally have students create 3 lines and four stanzas this same way choosing from the ideas brainstormed by the class.
5. Last have students read their poem and record it, adding music in garage band.

Criteria for evaluation of student products: District Speaking Rubric

Teacher reflections: This project was really fun for the
students. They really enjoyed working with garage band and
creating their own music. We would definately do this again, but
next time spend more time on the class discussion of how a rebus poem
looked. Also only give the students three instruments to choose
from because that part took a long time.
