Basketball - Passing/Dribbling
Grand Island Public Schools Unit Design Standard Unit Title: Basketball Skills - Passing/Dribbling Subject: Physical Education Designer: Neil T. Berger Introduction: This activity will encourage the students have a positive outlook and continue to strive for personal success. Grade Level: 3-5 Estimated Amount of Instructional Time: 4-5 days Stage 1 - Desired Results The students will enter the gym and travel to their assigned square and await further instructions. In our gym I have marked certain squares with a large X, the students partners will be located on the east or west of them across the gym. The goal of this activity is to allow students to learn valuable skills about both basketball and technology that may be helpful to them. GIPS Curriculum Standards National Physical Education Standards Standard 1:Demonstates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform varitety of physical activities. Standard 2: Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, and strategies and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities. Standard 3: Participates regularly in physical activity. Big Ideas (Enduring Understanding) This is a lesson which includes the use of technology and a skill in physical education. Students will explain their knowledge of a skill by using a Digital camera and by using Garageband and the pictures the students will create a slideshow. This will help the students feel more comfortable by working in groups to complete this assignment. Essential Questions Teacher: Did I explain the activity adequately? Do the students understand the activity? Did I clearly state my expectations? Will the students make excellent use of the time? Do I need to pick new partners? Students: What skills will help make me a better basketball player? What the Students Should Know The students will utilize their knowledge and understandng of how to operate a digital camera and computer. I plan to assign certain helpers to download pictures and to help with the slideshow and the Garageband music. One Hand in Use The verbal cues for dribbling: spider finger, proper force, knees bent, eyes aware. Two Hands in Use The verbal cues for passing: thumbs down, bring back to chest, extend out toward target. The verbal cues for passing: bring ball back behind head/elbows bent, with proper force pass the ball to your target. What Students Should Be Able To Do The students should be profocient in the assigned skill. Stage 2 - Assessment Evidence At the end of the lesson the students should be able to perform a successful basketabll pass that is accurate and to their partner and dribble a ball with one hand without losing control. Students should be able to catch a passed ball with arms extended and reach for the ball. I will not allow a ball to be caught with the assistance of their body. The students will utilize a chest, overhead and underhand without a bounce or they may choose to use a bounce pass. The main goal is for the students to play catch and dribble a ball with one hand and understand the importnace of using their fingers and hands rather than their body. I will evaluate the students with the use of a checklist. Performance Tasks The students will pass a regulation basketball to their partner across the gym. The students will dribble a regulation basketball around the gym. The students are aware of their square location from daily practice in physical education. The students will create a Keynote presentation demontrate their knowledge of basektball skills. Example of Student Work Other Evidence The students will practice the skills before they begin taking pictures and I will take time during my evaluation of their skills. Stage 3 - Learning Plan Day 1: (Instant Activity)The students will begin class on an assigned square and await further instructions. The students will get a ball and dribble in a area shaped like a circle. While inside the circle the students will try to knock away the other students' balls out of the circle, while maintaining control of their own. If a students' ball is knocked out they will driblle their ball the length of the gym and then they may return. This activity should last about 5-7 minutes. There will be adequate amount of digital cameras for the students to work in pairs. Day 2: Instruct the students to stand shoulder to shoulder with someone. Then ask them to move to the squares marked with large X. Students will then pass a ball to their partner. Students will also get their ball and practice dribbling the length of the floor without losing control. The students will continue to take pictures. Day 3: Students will finish gathering data to use for the work on the computer ( Keynote and the Digital pictures). Day 4: Students may need additional days to complete this assignment to expectations. Resources Needed Basketball for each student Cones for boundaries Squares with an X Verbal cue worksheets Digital cameras Computers Teacher Reflection This is an activity that will alow the students to become comfortable with taking pictures while working on skills in physical education class. The students will also become more comfortable with their computer skill when working with the Keynote program. |
