1 Grand Island Public Schools Unit Design Standards Unit Title: Dodge Dragon Award Subject: Proficient at 12 Physical Education Skills Designer: Ryan Hansen Introduction: The students participate in 12 Physical Education skills throughout the school year. They have a certain number to accomplish to get the award. Desired Results The goal is for the students to practice those skills needed to earn the award learned in Physical Education. Then the award winners will be put in an imovie. GIPS Curriculum Standards National Physical Education Standards Standard 1: Demonstrates Competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities. Standard 3: Participates regularly in physical activity. Standard 4: Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness. Big Ideas (Enduring Understanding) The students will experience and see how important it is for life long physical fitness. They will also see how improvement will take place. Essential Questions Does this movie get you motivated to win the Dodge Dragon Award? What Students Should Know The 5th grade students have experienced many of these skills and are becoming proficient at them, so now they become the teacher. The 5th grade students will make a narrated video of their skill that they have chosen. The 5th grade students will have jobs for each person in the group. The jobs will be videotaping, acting, speaking, computer work. The students will know their skill very well and will create a video for the younger students to help start them with that skill. The video will be played before and after the skill is taught for every grades 3-5. What Students Should Be Able To Do 1.) The students work all school year on 12 skills taught in Physical Education. 2.) These skills have a set number for each skill for the students to accomplish. 3.) I will then use imovie to put those students that earn the award into a movie to show at the assembly at the end of the school year. Assessment Evidence The students will be assessed on how well they know their skills in Physical Education The video they have created will be able to demonstrate that those students understand the skill. Performance Tasks The students will transfer their physical education skills to a set number to be performed at a proficient level to earn the Dodge Dragon Award.. Other Evidence I have a chart to keep track of the 12 skills that each student needs to earn the award. Learning Plan The skills that the students are expected to perform are all physical education skills that are used for physical fitness testing, and report card skills. These skills are: Basketball Routing 10 Double Dutch 25 Continuous Crossovers 25 Crossovers 5 Double Unders 8 Basketball shot in 30 Seconds 30 Lines on the Pacer Test 30 Jumps in 10 seconds 15 Volleyball Bumps 15 Volleyball Sets 2 Minute Jump Rope 15 Paddle Ups These will be tested all year and the award given in May. Resources Needed iMovie Teacher Reflections These skills will be practiced and taught all year until they accomplish each one. They will have to work on their own to reach each skill. Skills on iMovie for grades 3-5 Subject: Basketball Shooting, Throwing, Doubledutch, Baseball Hitting, Catching, Punting, Paddle Designer: Ryan Hansen Introduction:The students will video tape and narrate their skill that they choose and put it into imovie to show other students when teaching the lesson. Desired Results When the students reach 5th Grade they should be skilled enough to be able to teach the younger students. The 5th Grade students should be profient and able to create an iMovie to demonstrate Physical Education skills to te lower grades that haven't mastered the skill. Big Ideas (Enduring Understandings) The fifth grade students will learn how important it is to know how to do the skill, and to be able to teach these skills to the younger students. Assessment Evidence The students are put in a group of 4 or 5 and they each choose a task to do for the porject. One will be the voice for the ipod One will be the video camera person One will be putting everything on the computer One will have to be the actor in the video camera Performance Tasks The 5th Graders created a movie to show other students about skills they have learned in Physical Education. Other Evidence Their finished product tells me that they have mastered the skill and by applying it to imovie teaches them a computer skill. This will show the kids that technology can be used towards anything. Learning Plan The students will start by choosing a skill in Physical Education: Basketball Shooting, Baseball Hitting, Overhand Throw, Double Dutch, Punting. Then as a group they will be given the steps of each skill. They will then take a photo of each step to teach their skill. The groups will then put all the photos onto imovie and use their voice on an ipod to transfer it to imovie. These movies will be used to help teach the younger grades Physcial Education Skills. Resources Needed Physical Education equipment imovie Teacher Reflections I think this will help those younger students see other kids teaching the skill and this might help them remember the steps listening to someone more their age. 3 Grand Island Public Schools Unit Design Standards Unit Title: Blue Zone Subject: Dodge Blue Zone Designer: Jan Tell and company (Ryan Hansen, Sarah Davis, Heather Myer) Blue Zone Team (3rd,4th,5th Grades) Introduction: At Dodge we are committed to making healthy changes in our lives that will help us look and feel better. The steps in research that they will use will help them in all areas of their lives. Desired Results Students will learn the steps in research to solve the problem. Students will understand concepts of nutrition and diet Students will use and understanding of nutrition to plan appropriate diets for themselves. Students will understand their own individual eating patterns and ways that those patterns maybe improved. Big Idea (Enduring Understandings) We want to students to be able to come up with ways to gather resources and solve a problem that works for them selves. Essential Questions How do you live a long and healthy life? What Students Should Know They should know the food groups and their nutritional value. They should know the USDA food pyramid guidelines. They should know media center orientation and literacy. What Students Should Be Able To Do They should be able to utilize the big six skills. They should be able to create a personal connection with people in the community through research. For example: Their responses to evidence tracker, Interactions with blue zone team, connection with community, Assessment Evidence In Physical Education and the Nurse will get the height and weight from each students at the beginning of the year and one at the end to make sure they are gaining at a normal rate. Check list from the Dodge the Dodge Dragon Away Learning Plan Introduce them with the blue zone challenge at the beginning of the year. They were given different ways to encourage their physical activity. The 5th Grade students were the first to encourage others with: 1. Health & Nutrition Unit, 2. Get Up & Go Challenges 3. Resources Needed internet blue zones curriculum guide Dodge WebLog 4 Grand Island Public Schools Unit Design Standards Unit Title: DDR on Comic Life Subject: Exercise playing video games Designer: Ryan Hansen Introduction: The 4th Grade students will use Comic Life to explain how they use DDR's in Physical Education. Desired Results The goal is for the students to see how DDR's can give them exercise through video games. They will find this our visually with pedometers they each wear. GIPS Curriculum Standards Standard 3: Participates regularly in physical activity. Standard 4: Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness. Big Ideas (Enduring Understanding) The students will experience and see how important it is for life long physical fitness and that it can come from video games. They will also see how their improvement of their physical health will take place. Essential Questions How do DDR's create a healthy lifestyle? What Students Should Know They should know that video games can be good exercise. They should know how many steps are possible with pedometers they use. What Students Should Be Able To Do They should be able to see that video games can be a healthy video game. They should be able to see that pedometers can calculate their steps to stay healthy. Assessment Evidence In Physical Education we track their progress with pedometers. This can record their steps, calories burned, and miles. Performance Tasks The Dodge student participate in DDR's once a month to calculate the steps that these video games can provide. This gives the children another form of exercise in the winter months or a choice for a gift. Other Evidence Participates in physical activity with their family with a Get Up and Go Challenge. This challenge incorporates family members charting physical activities with them and receiving rewards for reaching a certain point. This is to show the parents and the students how important their health is for the whole family. Learning Plan Introduce the importance of physical activity for every student. We discussed ho girls need 12,000 steps and boys 16,000 steps to stay healthy. I have discussed how video games can be a healthy form of exercise. Then we have used pedometers to have a see exactly what they are doing each day in Physical Education.
